Calling all actors: ANDY’S PLAYHOUSE auditions begin this weekend in NH!

I’m starting to get real excited for the upcoming summer season at Andy’s Summer Playhouse in Wilton, NH! Auditions begin this weekend!

If you are a child with a keen imagination and a willingness to be goofy and inspiring while also having the courage to tell unbelievable stories shedding light into human behavior and everyone’s need to dream big? Yeah, then this is where you need to be this summer.

I’ll be writing and directing the first show of the summer, THE BFG, and am in the process of creating a pretty drastic remodeling of the story….

My adaptation will be filled with chapters from THE BFG, sprinkling a subplot from WHEN THE VERTICAL WORLD BECOMES HORIZONTAL and adding the story of Jack, a child living as one of the MOLE PEOPLE in the subways of NYC who just wants to build a garden. The story will take place in all 5 borroughs of NYC and hopefully create a nice little allegory that fulfills the themes and stylings of Roald Dahl and his fantastic book.

Here is a trailer I made for the Winter Gala…. Moving from last year’s adapation of THE LOST WORLD into a world of Giants and NYC’s finest underground…

Awesome article on Natsu Onoda Power! ASTROBOY opens next week!

Here is a wonderful article in the Washington Post spotlighting our fantastic Director, Natsu. She breathes the life of the comics onto a stage in ways that are so innovative and exciting. It’s going to be an honor to open this show with her and this wonderful cast and crew.

The Lost World and Andy’s Playhouse in the NH Theater Awards

Just announced nominations for 2011 NH Theater Awards! Best Director and Best Original Playwright for my production of The Lost World at Andy’s Summer Playhouse.

D.j. Potter (Original Playwright, KUNG FU BEACH PARTY) and Kerry Ryan (Original Playwright, ING ARTHUR & THE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE) also got nominated! Go team! Very proud to work with such creativity every summer and incredibly happy to see NH acknowledge the hard efforts it takes to create new work for children. Andy’s is near and dear to my heart, and it’s great to see the whole family at it again.

New Production Stills from POPPA GOD BLESS 2011

Check out some production stills from my workshop showing of POPPA GOD BLESS.

These stills were taken on the second night of the workshop, before the performance. Projectors cover four walls of a cube walled with scrim. The image of the wallpaper is mapped to the front of the cube, with the window cut out to reveal Poppa at his desk on the computer. As he types his e-mails, images from his past surface on the walls of his apartment, folding the past and present into a singular, blurred reality that Poppa exists in.

Quick look: Poppa God Bless

I arrived in North Carolina yesterday to the energy of the theater in full swing. The cube went up and projectors were focused and I’m now able to just play for a day before the actors arrive in the space to really get down to business. Here are some shots of just some non-actor looks I was playing with. Poppa will be inside the cube in his email world. This first day, for me, was to make sure all those silly images in my head actually translate to the three-dimensional space. It’s a scary moment to turn on the projectors, to be honest. I always shiver in fear that nothing will translate. In that moment, we are irrevocably changed to an absolute…. the inside-your-head either works or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t, you have to start working outside of your imagined world to just get something legible and that is its own process that is fun and exciting, but not one I was looking to embark on this week. Poppa has been in my head for months and months and months in such a specific way.

On this first day, though, it felt pretty good!
